This session will focus on practical strategies for supporting ELLs with literacy development at the upper elementary and middle school grades. Participants will briefly explore relevant research on ELL literacy and second language development and will discuss its impact in their context. They will discuss ways of fostering the development of students’ foundational literacy skills at these grade levels. Participants will collaborate to apply the concepts they have learned in developing a lesson that they can use in their context.
Participants will:
- Discuss relevant aspects of second language acquisition in support of developing literacy skills for upper elementary and middle school ELLs who may not be literate in their home language(s).
- Develop a toolbox of at least 5 strategies and tools they can use immediately in their classrooms to support literacy development of upper elementary and middle school ELLs, including strategies & tools to support: Vocabulary instruction, Concepts of print & reading development, Writing development, Appropriate scaffolds for reading & writing, and Creating & selecting texts that support the teaching of reading skills for low-literacy Ells.
