Educators face a unique challenge when students are culturally, linguistically and academically diverse and yet, they are expected to meet common standards. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a scientifically valid framework based on cognitive neuroscience that suggests variability within the learner is predictable and can be systematically addressed. UDL provides us with the guidelines to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all by planning instruction from the beginning that is culturally responsive and linguistically appropriate by being flexible, engaging, validating, strategic and motivating. When applied to English language learners, we can predict and create the access points students will need to succeed with a "one size fits all" curriculum and standards.
In this workshop, participants will be able to:
Examine the Universal Design for Learning framework to see how it applies to teaching culturally and linguistically diverse learners.
Identify the potential barriers, preferences and supports for multi-lingual learners within the content areas.
Design instruction that takes into consideration learner variability and anticipate student needs.
Utilize the principles of UDL to develop students that are purposeful and motivated, resourceful and knowledgeable, strategic and goal oriented learners.
Analyze illustrations (case studies, lesson plans and classroom examples) of UDL in action for language learners and all students.
