Stimulating Metalinguistic Awareness: Engaging ELL/MLL Learners in Meaningful Conversations about Language and Texts - ONLINE via ZOOM

Presented by: Dr. Marcela Ossa Parra, Assistant Professor, Elementary and Early Childhood Education, Queens College, CUNY

How can teachers leverage students' knowledge of their home languages to enhance English language and literacy development? This workshop examines the role of metalinguistic awareness in the language and literary development of ELL/MLL learners, and proposes pedagogical strategies that integrate students' languages to engage them in meaningful conversations about language and texts. Key strategies will be modeled in the workshop, and participants will be engaged in reflection about the principles guiding the design of these strategies. As a result of this workshop, participants will leave with pedagogical strategies that they may adapt to their own classrooms. Additionally, they will have access to lesson plans that integrate the proposed pedagogical strategies in the context of the NYS Advanced Literacies Framework. The lesson plans are designed for Spanish-English bilinguals, but may be adapted to other languages.

To access this workshop, a Zoom link will be shared with registered participants to the email addresses they used to enroll in Frontline (MLP).
