Universal Design for Language Learners - 2-Part Virtual Series (FOR SULLIVAN BOCES STAFF AND COMPONENT DISTRICTS ONLY)

SULLIVAN COUNTY BOCES CONFERENCE DAYS

Educators of students who are culturally, linguistically, and academically diverse can apply the framework of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to support them in meeting state standards. UDL is a way of thinking and planning for teaching and learning that helps give all students an equal opportunity to succeed. This approach offers flexibility in the ways that students access and engage with material and demonstrate what they are learning. It guides teachers in "designing" lesson plans that are "universally" accessible to all learners, especially for diverse learners. It also provides for a culturally responsive experience by being flexible, engaging, validating, strategic and motivating. When applied to English language learners, teachers can create the access points students will need to succeed with a "one size fits all" curriculum and standards.

In Parts 1 and 2 of this workshop, participants will:
-Examine the Universal Design for Learning framework to see how it applies to teaching culturally and linguistically diverse learners.
-Identify the potential barriers, preferences and supports for multilingual learners within the content areas.
-Observe the elements of UDL in lessons that provide multiple means of action, expression and engagement to learners in classroom video examples.
-Design instruction utilizing the principles of UDL that account for learner variability and anticipate student needs.
