This 2-week online workshop will examine frameworks for culturally responsive education and critical literacy. The instructional strategies presented target secondary (7-12) students, especially ELLs, and emphasize student engagement. Research on exemplary literacy practices demonstrates that students benefit from opportunities to use language critically, in multiple contexts, in different modalities (reading, writing, listening and speaking), and through the lenses of their culture and identity and those of others. Therefore, this hands-on workshop will examine instructional practices that promote cross-cultural understanding and critical discussions among students, while empowering them to take transformative civic action.
