This 2-week online workshop will examine frameworks for culturally responsive education aligned to recent NYSED policy initiatives on diversity, equity and inclusion, with an emphasis on critical literacy. The instructional strategies presented target secondary (7-12) students, especially ELLs, and promote student engagement. Research on exemplary literacy practices demonstrates that students benefit from opportunities to use language critically, in multiple contexts, in different modalities (reading, writing, listening and speaking), and through the lenses of their culture and identity and those of others. Therefore, this hands-on workshop will examine instructional practices that promote cross-cultural understanding and critical discussions among students, while empowering them to take transformative civic action.
This course offers two CTLE credit options:
6 CTLE Credit Hours: Participants selecting this option will complete six (6) short activities from a menu of eight (8) options, including one initial and one concluding reflection. Activities include short-written descriptions of how you would apply what you are learning to your instructional practice, one lesson plan outline to apply course ideas (not optional), and brief reflections on key ideas presented in the course.
8 CTLE Credit Hours: Participants selecting this option will complete the six (6) activities mentioned above plus one additional activity, consisting of a short unit outline that incorporates the ideas presented in the workshop (total: 7 activities).
