When an ELL is struggling academically, educators may consider a referral for special education services. This is a complex process and requires careful examination of the intersection of multiple elements. During this workshop, participants will explore how second language acquisition, cultural and linguistic diversity and educational environments play a part in student learning. We will also examine behaviors of language acquisition that mimic a disability, legal requirements and exclusionary factors. This knowledge will help teams rule out external or systemic factors, and plan for appropriate interventions and assessments.
Participants should bring a device to access workshop materials.
