Writing Is Thinking through strategic inquiry (WITsi) is an approach to delivering direct instruction in writing strategies that leverage improved writing, oral language, content knowledge, and reading comprehension simultaneously to English Language Learners. They will learn how the English language works. Participants can expect to leave each session with activities for immediate classroom use that will yield improved writing, language and thinking. The focus of each day in the series is as follows:
Day 1 (October 15, 2018): Overview of the WIT approach and its integration with inquiry to identify evidence of granular student needs. Focus on strategies to solidify students’ understanding of sentence boundaries and to write complex sentences using "because", "but" and "so".
Day 2 (November 19, 2018): Continued focus on sentence complexity, including appositives and subordinating conjunctions. Design of activities and multilingual entry points.
Day 3 (January 14, 2019): Focus on sentence combining and expansion and continued use of multilingual entry points.
Day 4 (February 15, 2019): Focus on what we call “parallel revision,” to ensure that strategies learned in isolation transfer to students’ independent writing.
