Research shows that students learn more effectively when they have familiarity with the content they are about to learn. How can we activate the prior knowledge of ELL/MLL students in their new language? Which strategies can we use to provide ELL/MLL students with the background knowledge they may not already have? In this workshop, participants will learn several interactive strategies for activating and building upon the background knowledge that students need to access literacy, content lesson topics and themes across grade levels. Participants will then choose a newly learned strategy and brainstorm how they might include it in future lessons and units.
*NOTE: Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop, tablet or Chromebook.
