Oftentimes, public school students who are immigrants, English Language Learners and/or people of color regularly face microaggressions or other racist abuse and do not see themselves represented in their school's curriculum or personnel. In this workshop, participants will hear and reflect on narratives-mostly transcribed from oral interviews with High School students in the Hudson Valley-about how their racial identity has affected their experiences. In addition, participants will examine several "equity detours” (Gorksy, 2019): initiatives and institutional habits that can perpetuate racial inequity by creating a feel-good illusion of progress. The workshop will also explain concepts like "institutional racism and implicit bias.”
Registered participants will receive an email with the Zoom conference call information prior to the conference call. Upon completion of the call, registered participants will receive a link to a feedback form; completion of the feedback form will confirm your attendance.
This session and the associated chat will be recorded and will be made available in the HV RBERN Resources folder accessed through our website.
