This 2-week online, self-paced workshop will examine frameworks for culturally responsive education and critical literacy. The instructional strategies presented target secondary (7-12) students, especially ELLs, and emphasize student engagement. Research on exemplary literacy practices demonstrates that students benefit from opportunities to use language critically, in multiple contexts, in different modalities (reading, writing, listening and speaking), and through the lenses of their culture and identity and those of others. Therefore, this hands-on workshop will examine instructional practices that promote cross-cultural understanding and critical discussions among students, while empowering them to take transformative civic action.

This course offers two CTLE credit options:

6 CTLE Credit Hours: Participants selecting this option will complete five (5) short activities from a menu of seven (7) options, including one initial and one concluding reflection. Activities include short-written descriptions of how you would apply what you are learning to your instructional practice, one lesson plan outline to apply course ideas (not optional), and brief reflections on key ideas presented in the course.

8 CTLE Credit Hours: Participants selecting this option will complete the five (5) activities mentioned above plus an additional activity, consisting of a short unit outline that incorporates the ideas presented in the workshop.
