Bedford CSD: Academic Success for Linguistically Diverse Learners - 4-Part Series - at SWBOCES (SESSION 3)

Participants will delve into the concepts embedded in NYSED’s Advanced Literacy Briefs on Linguistically Diverse Learners and learn how to develop units that incorporate the four hallmarks of Advanced Literacy, using a Knowledge-Building Cycle for unit planning.

Session 1: Foundations of Advanced Literacies
Participants will learn the basics of Advanced Literacies and its four hallmarks. They will also discover key tools and strategies for integrating advanced literacy practices, concluding with brainstorming for a spring unit topic.

Session 2: Knowledge-Building Unit Cycle & Language Production Project
In this session, participants will dive into the Knowledge-Building Unit Cycle and the Language Production Project, learning about their sequences and components.

Session 3: Refining the Knowledge-Building Unit Plan
Attendees will explore tools and strategies, and draft plans for an upcoming unit. Participants will refine their drafted unit plans, aligning them with Advanced Literacy principles and addressing any emerging questions, in preparation for implementation.

Session 4: Continued Unit Plan Work, Debrief & Reflection
Participants will either continue planning their unit for implementation, or start next steps for planning a future unit using the Advanced Literacies Knowledge-Building Unit Cycle. Participants will also reflect, garner feedback, and gather insights to perfect their future unit planning.

Participants should bring a device to access workshop materials.
