PK-12 Immigration Literature Conference: Storytelling for Visibility, Understanding and Transformation - Breakout Sessions Announced
Saturday, March 8, 2025 10:00-3:00 PM, The City College of New York - Great Hall at Shepard Hall, 160 Convent Avenue, New York, NY
This one-day conference is designed to inspire and empower educators to integrate immigration-focused literature into their classrooms by fostering a deeper understanding of the migration experience. Through a keynote presentation, interactive breakout sessions, and a panel with children and young adult literature authors, participants will experience the power of storytelling as a means to learn about oneself and one’s neighbors, and to take action to create a stronger and more interconnected society.

Administering the Interpersonal and Presentational Assessment Tasks at Checkpoint A
Tuesday, March 11th, 2025, 4:00-5:00 PM via Zoom
In this webinar, participants will review the relevant sections of the Principles and Guidelines for Adopting or Creating Locally Developed Benchmark Assessments for Checkpoint A (Modern Languages) and sample scoring guides aligned to the NYS WL Master Rubrics. Participants will examine a variety of tasks and observe how to apply the scoring guides to assess student proficiency at the Checkpoint A level.
Presentational and Interpersonal Communication for Classical Languages - Part 1

Building on the previous Classical Languages webinar on Standard 1, Interpretive Communication, you will dive into the two output standards: Standard 2 - Presentational Communication; and Standard 3 - Interpersonal Communication. Participants will explore ways to create engaging contexts for students to share their proficiency in the target language in Presentational Writing and Speaking and Interpersonal Speaking. You will consider various Presentational and Interpersonal Strategies integrated into the context of thematic lessons.
Creating Meaningful Communicative Contexts

In this webinar, you will look at ways to transform lessons in the 3 modes of communication into tasks that compel students to learn and communicate in the target language. You will examine ways to construct prompts and scenarios to engage learners and also simple changes that can be made to existing lessons to provide meaningful contexts that allow students to communicate in the target language.
