HV RBERN Update

Happy New Year! We have a few things to share with you as we begin this new year.

2020 Census
The U.S. Census Bureau recently launched an update to 2020census.gov that includes content in 59 languages, including language assistance guides and videos that explain how to complete the 2020 Census questionnaire online, by phone, or by mail when it becomes available in mid-March. People can respond to the census online and by phone in 13 languages. The expansive site includes in-depth information in both English and Spanish. The press release can be viewed here.

NYSITELL Reordering
In the event that your building needs to replenish your NYSITELL materials, the attached memo details the process. We have fielded questions about what the most recent Session means (see below). In the Session ordering page, Session numbers are indicated in the format of S1, S2, and so on. S is for Session and the number corresponds to the month of the school year, beginning in August (S1). In ordering, select the latest Session available. For example, if you order in January, you will select S6, which is the most recent Session listed. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Obtaining Additional NYSITELL Materials

Principals who find that they need additional NYSITELL materials may return to the online examination request system throughout the school year to revise or add any supplemental quantities needed. To place your request, go to the most recent Session. Any supplemental materials requested throughout the school year should arrive at the school 30-60 days after the request has been made.

New SIFE Manual
This SIFE Manual was created for educators across New York State who are looking for guidance and best practices around intake, programming, instruction and assessment for SIFE. The guidance provided in this manual can help schools and districts reflect on ways to strengthen the services and instruction they provide these students.

Revision of New York State Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Learning Standards
The New York State Education Department is currently seeking feedback on the Proposed Revisions to the New York State Learning Standards for Languages Other Than English (LOTE), which they are proposing to be renamed as the New York State World Languages Learning Standards. The Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages has posted a Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Standards Review Page. All P-12 teachers of World Languages, building and district leaders, and other interested stakeholders are invited to visit this page to learn more about the updated standards and to give feedback on these proposed revisions. The Public Comment Survey for providing feedback will remain open through February 1, 2020. Email questions to obewl@nysed.gov.

Recruitment of Educators to Write Questions for the Grades 3-8 English Language Arts and Mathematics Tests
NYSED’s contractor, Questar III, is seeking educators who have worked in a group setting, as well as independently, to write items that may be used in future New York State Grades 3-8 ELA and Mathematics assessments. Specific information about the meeting dates and locations, pre-training, qualifying requirements, and honoraria is included in the recruitment communication. Questions about the Item Writer Workshops should be sent to Questar at ny.3-8.help@questarai.com. Other questions about the Grades 3-8 Tests may be directed to the Office of State Assessment at 518-474-5902 or emscassessinfo@nysed.gov.
