Other Professional Development

The City University of New York - Initiative on Immigration and Education (CUNY-IIE) is offering free virtual professional learning opportunities to educators across New York State. Upon successful completion of an immigration and education focused module, teachers, administrators and counselors will earn 20 Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credits. The modules will include 8 mandatory hours of online synchronous sessions and an additional 12 hours of asynchronous small group and independent work. Educators can sign up for one module of the following modules (spaces are limited):

  • Key Immigrant Issues

  • Immigration in Elementary Education

  • Immigration in Secondary Education

  • Approaches to Educating Refugees and Immigrants (preference given to educators in Western NY)

SUNY Buffalo State will host a Bilingual Special Education Online Winter Institute for teachers to obtain their bilingual extension. The program will be 100% online with a start date of November 2, 2020. Please view flyer here.

The New York State Education Department recently approved three additional pathway assessments. The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Arabic was added to the Department-Approved Pathway Assessments in Languages Other Than English and the National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) 21st Century Skills for Workplace Success and Employability Skills

Assessments were added to the Department-Approved Pathway Assessments in Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS).

Family Ties of Westchester, Inc. is offering online, evidence-based parent skills coaching for caregivers.

These sessions will promote positive, strength-based relationships, and will support caregivers by enhancing their skills, fortifying effective communication techniques and fostering parenting self-esteem. These sessions will only be available in Spanish. For more information view English and Spanish flyers here.

Other Professional Development

The Thelma P. Lally School of Education at The College of Saint Rose has launched a new online advanced certificate in Teaching English as a New Language. This graduate certificate of advanced study in TESOL enables those with initial teacher certification in early childhood, childhood, or adolescence education to earn NYSED certification as a teacher of English as a New Language. The program encourages the development of education professionals who are reflective practitioners, able to link content, theory, and practice, and able to create effective learning environments for all learners. The next class begins October 15th. Due to popular demand, we are continuing our ELL Connection Thursday virtual meetings. Every month, we will have both elementary- and secondary-focused ELL Connection virtual meetups. Elementary meetups will be from 3:45–4:45 PM and secondary meetups are scheduled from 3:00–4:00 PM. ELL Connection Thursdays dates and registration information can be accessed via our events calendar. Registration is required for each meetup.

Hudson Valley RBERN Technology Specialist, Greg Bailey, created this interactive infographic with his top 50 Tech Tools for remotely reaching ELLs. This is a living document that will periodically be updated with new content and descriptive videos/details about the technologies and their applications for ELLs. NYSED OBEWL has issued a revised Parent Notification Letter to address the cancellation of the 2020 NYSESLAT and student ENL services. The letter is available in English and the 10 most commonly spoken languages spoken by ELLs in NYS at this link.

Central American immigrant students represent one of the fastest-growing populations in the American classroom. Most have experienced significant trauma in their countries of origin and on route to the United States, and many have had interrupted or limited formal education. Their experiences, particularly during the pandemic, are unique, as are their significant reserves of strength and resilience. This workshop will help educators understand the obstacles these students face and ways to hone their resilience in light of new challenges.

Developing Responsive Classrooms for SIFE & Newcomer Learners

This is a six week CTLE online course for New York State Educators. Preference for enrollment will be given to teams of content teachers and ENL teachers from the same school. The course is designed for inclusion and mainstream classrooms where SIFE and newcomers are served. Please register here.
